The meaning of the hyacinth

The word hyacinth finds its origins in the Greek word «giak» which means «dark red», that is, it is thought, the only color that the flower originally had. In his work «Metamorphosis», Ovid tells that Apollo tried in every way to save his friend from death, but he did not succeed. Therefore he transformed his remains into blood-red flowers, giving them the name of Hyacinth. In the language of flowers, the red hyacinth therefore has the meaning of «pain», while the blue one is a symbol of «coherence»; the white hyacinthit means «beauty» and yellow means «jealousy». This beautiful spring flower is born in the tropical regions of Africa and the eastern Mediterranean, but today it is also widespread in Asia and Europe, where it received the greatest attention of the courts (especially in Vienna) during the Renaissance. The hyacinth is a bulbous that can be easily grown both in the ground and in pots. For the latter type of cultivation, the ideal soil for planting is nothing more than a mixture of coarse sand, planting soil and vegetable loose earth (but common garden soil is also fine).
