Lolium perennial

What is lolium perenne and meadows

Lolium perenne is also called ryegrass or English ryegrass: in fact it is a really resistant and lasting plant and is highly appreciated in Great Britain, where it was introduced for the first time in the seventeenth century. It allows you to create very dense grassy lawns with a remarkable aesthetic impact. Lolium perenne is a grass that comes from the Mediterranean basin and Asia, but has been adopted as a crop for centuries. for this reason it is one of the most common weed species in temperate zones. Its resistance does not protect it from drought and therefore requires regular and abundant watering. This is especially true for the summer season; in this period it is advisable to water early in the morning or in the evening. This prevents the sun from burning the green parts. There are also varieties that have been selected to adapt to the Mediterranean climate and therefore require lower water supplies. Attention must be paid to excess water.

Lolium perenne is a bushy plant, which reaches 50-80 cm in height: it is characterized by having a superficial root system, shiny leaves and erect culms, whose base is very often red-pigmented. In addition, the plant is provided with short orecchiette and has flowers gathered in spike inflorescences of 5-10 units. This species comes from small seeds, so much so that 2 grams contain about a thousand. The perennial Lolium generally lives for 3-4 years, but the life span of the lawn can also be much longer if special precautions are implemented and if the environmental conditions are favorable. It grows very quickly and is characterized by having an abundant yield and to give a grassy surface of remarkable quality. Furthermore, the Lolium perenne is a very adaptable species to different soils and really versatile.

Soils and ways to fertilize the lawn

In most cases the lawns of the villas and houses are of Lolium perenne or a mixture of varieties in which this species is of considerable importance. In fact, it is the most frequently proposed seed since it develops very quickly. Lolium perenne grows with excellent results in any type of soil; it has a low cost and resists the effects of trampling very well. As far as fertilization is concerned, it is an operation to be carried out to have a thick lawn, of great aesthetic impact and that lasts a long time. In particular, it is necessary to provide the soil with nutrients such as phosphorus, potassium and above all nitrogen. This nutrient is essential to allow the turf to incorporate reserve water.

The lawn of Lolium perenne is very vigorous and can be used in playgrounds or for ornamental purposes. To have long-lasting and beautiful results, it is necessary to prevent the degradation of the turf and the development of diseases. Most of the diseases that afflict the turf are cryptogamic, that is of fungal origin: the most common are root rot, gray mold, sore white and powdery mildew. They are the so-called primary diseases and are caused by excessive irrigation or water stagnation in the soil. To prevent them from occurring, it is good to pay attention to the balance of the substrate. Other diseases that affect Lolium perenne are viral and bacterial, however their incidence is very slight. Lawn degradation can also be related to stress,
