3 easy lotion recipes with Aloe Vera for your skin

I have already covered a few different topics on making your own Aloe Vera beauty products or alternative medicines ; but one of my favorite activities is creating our own Aloe Vera lotions. It’s fun and it can offer a ton of benefits.

Since Aloe is such a versatile natural ingredient, you can have a lot of fun combining different essences, oils, and other nourishing ingredients without «getting it wrong.» There is really no wrong answer, it all depends on what you prefer and what you want to achieve with your beauty regimen.

Here are some of the answers to your questions about making your own Aloe Vera lotions .

Why make your own Aloe Vera Lotion?

A lotion is basically a thick but smooth liquid that can be safely applied to your skin or hair for healing or cosmetic benefits. A traditional recipe for Aloe lotions would include an emulsifier, water, natural oils, and preservatives. All of these can be natural ingredients, of course!

The benefits of making your own Aloe Vera lotions are plentiful. Decide exactly what the ingredients will be; Ideally they will all be organic, free of pesticides, harmful chemicals, and full of preservatives. They can have your favorite scents and be made exactly the way you prefer.

Is Aloe Vera lotion a medicine?

A lotion is something that should not be used to treat open wounds, but would be applied to intact skin. For normal, oily, or dry skin, aloe lotions can work wonders.

Buying aloe lotions offers many advantages but they can be quite expensive and sometimes, they do not use Aloe Barbadensis, which is the only one I recommend, since it contains all the desired nutrients – polysaccharides, etc.

When you make your lotion from scratch, you will know exactly what goes into the concoction, how fresh it is, and will be able to keep it fresh from the start. You have to see it as an alternative medicine and not as a remedy for treating any skin condition you may have – aloe lotions are more of a supplement .

What are the main ingredients to make your own aloe vera lotions?

  • Natural essential oils
  • Preservatives
  • Fragrances
  • Distilled Water or Aloe Juice/ Gel
  • Emulsifier/ Wax

Is it safe to add preservatives to my aloe lotion?

Of course! People often confuse the word «preservative» with the understanding that it must be artificial. Preservatives can be as natural as the water you drink or the air you breathe.

It is possible to make aloe lotions without any preservative agents, but the lotion mixture will not last long. After a few weeks, you may start to see mold and bacteria appear, so the choice you made to be healthy and avoid preservatives can do the opposite and pose health risks.

For those who don’t want to use preservatives yet, I recommend not adding distilled water to their lotion mixes .

Won’t the oils make my lotion greasy on my skin?

This is quite common, but usually oily lotions seep into the skin quickly and efficiently.

What to use for oily skin?

If you suffer from oily skin and you don’t want to add oils and make it worse, there are some things you can add to your Aloe lotion. Everything that is done at home is more enjoyable, so don’t worry if you want to change things to suit your tastes.

By using tapioca powder, you can reduce the greasiness of your aloe mix, allowing for a much smoother texture. Just try adding a pinch and don’t add too much at once. Adding more aloe gel can resolve the sticky feeling as well, as it will decrease the concentration of the oils used.

What is an emulsifier?

It’s the part that ties all the other ingredients together and keeps things from falling apart. Notice how oil and water don’t usually mix? Well, that is what your emulsifier will take care of.

If you don’t use an emulsifier, your lotion won’t work, so I’ve added one to each of my recipe recommendations. The gum Xanthan  and beeswax are two popular options to help unite your lotions, but you need to use the right amount for the mixture to seep into the skin.

Aloe vera lotion recipes

Now that you know how to make your own Aloe Vera lotions, here is a list of some of my favorite Aloe Vera lotion recipes. I hope you try each one at least once so that you can fully experience the therapeutic benefits of each.

1. Aloe gel and almond oil lotion

What you will need:

  • ½ cup of almond oil
  • 30 grams of crushed beeswax
  • 1 cup fresh aloe gel
  • 10 drops of essential oil … I recommend lavender for this
  • 1 teaspoon of vitamin E oil (optional)

How to do it:

  1. Melt the almond oil and beeswax in a hot skillet, then add the fresh aloe gel, essential oils, and vitamin E in a separate bowl.
  2. Allow the almond oil and beeswax to cool after gently melting.
  3. Blend the oils in a blender on low speed and pour in the aloe mixture slowly, checking the consistency as you add it. Does it seem too runny? Is it smooth enough? Pay attention to this part to be successful.
  4. This can also be done with a mixing bowl and a conventional electric hand mixer. To store it, put the lotion in clean jars and let it cool, then keep them refrigerated; They should last up to 6 weeks, giving you plenty of time to see if it really works for you .

2. Aloe gel and mint leaf lotion

What you will need:

  • Half a cup of fresh and dried mint leaves .
  • 4 drops of essential oil diluted in a carrier oil… I like to use lime for this.
  • ½ cup of beeswax
  • ¼ cup Aloe gel

This one finishes exquisitely creamy and the mint can be invigorating, but the best way to try it is to make it yourself. It is more suitable for sensitive skin if you are concerned about using other mixtures.

How to do it:

  1. Melt 3 tablespoons of beeswax and lime oil gently in a bowl, microwave, or double warmer (one bowl over a pot of water, etc.) will work.
  2. Make sure the solution is clear when it melts and there is no separate beeswax. Let it cool and harden.
  3. Combine the mint leaves and aloe gel and mix them in a mug.
  4. First add the beeswax and oil to a blender, then slowly add the aloe and mint leaves to the blender and mix the ingredients slowly.
  5. Do not add all the aloe gel at the same time, do it little by little to make sure it has the right consistency, remembering that you can add it but you cannot remove it.
  6. When you have the level of thickness you want, store it in jars and keep it refrigerated so it will last longer.

Apply to your skin daily and see if it works for you too .

3. Aloe Vera and Coconut Oil Lotion

This one is pretty and simple!

You will need to:

  • ¼ cup fresh aloe gel
  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • 4 drops of vitamin E oil
  • 4 drops of lavender essential oil

How to do it:

  1. Beat the aloe gel with the coconut oil in a bowl until it reaches the desired thickness.
  2. Add vitamin E and lavender essential oil.
  3. Shake it again and store it in jars or containers that can be tightly closed.
  4. Apply it daily and enjoy.

Use of aloe lotions for hands, body and face

The remarkable thing about aloe lotions is that they are safe to use on all skin types and on all parts of the body.

Always try a small amount first to be sure.

If you want to make lotions creamier then you can add shea butter which is a great option, but use a high quality source or your lotion may not mix properly.

Almond or grapeseed oil is ideal for people who want to completely avoid an oily, sticky, or greasy feeling from the lotion on their skin. All the homemade lotions I use will help protect your skin in the summer and winter months.

The fact that we use recipes that are simple and pure means that there is no need to add chemicals to your skin. Knowing which one is the best for you is a big part of the fun, knowing that you can practice it safely.
