What is Neem oil?
Neem oil is made up of triglycerides and a significant amount of triterpenoid compounds, which are responsible for its bitter taste. In addition to many types of fatty acids.
It is repelled by water, so it needs to be formulated with appropriate surfactants to be able to mix. This hydrophobic property is quite useful when used asinsect repellent in outdoor crops, since it does not come off the leaves easily, much less with the presence of rain.

What does Neem oil contain?
The Neem tree contains many active ingredients, most notably terpenes, which are aromatic and volatile organic compounds.
also ownsderivatives that affect insects, since its molecules are similar to the ecdysomes of insects. Ecdysomes are hormones that control the metamorphosis processes of certain insects.
Among the components that Neem oil has and that morecontribute to the insecticidal functionwe find:
- Azadirone, Nimbolina and Vepinina: present in the oil that is extracted from the seeds.
- Amorastaitin and Vilasinin: present in the leaves.
- Geduninin: Found in the oil of the seeds and the bark.
- Nimbina and Salanina: In the leaves and seeds.
These components affect the system of the insects and block the proper functioning of their real hormones, causing the insects to stop performing basic functions such as eating, mating or laying eggs.
Some insects eventhey forget how to fly and the larvae do not move from one plant to another.
Neem oil reduces the population of insects until, finally, they disappear. Its effectiveness varies with respect to the species, since it works differently with each insect.
Neem oil contains so many active substances, each affecting different species of insect.
On the other hand, Neem oil does not harm beneficial insects, but rather those that are a real problem in crops.

How to make Neem oil?
To prepare1 liter from a 0.5% dilution of neemneeded:
- 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of neem oil.
- 1-2 ml (1/3 teaspoon) insecticidal soap or other detergent.
- 1 liter of warm water.
If you want to make a more concentrated batch, you will need to increase the amount of neem oil as well as the amount of soap.
To prepare20 liters of a 1% neem solutionis required:
- 200 ml of neem oil.
- 30 ml of insecticidal soap.
- 20 liters of water.
Recommendations:
- Use a high-quality, organic, cold -pressed oil.
- Use lukewarm water, if possible.
- If you’re planning to make a large batch, first make a premix in a small amount of warm water, then add the rest of the water.
- Ideally, mix the warm water with the soap first. Then slowly add the oil while stirring vigorously.
- Once the mixture is made, it is placed in the sprinkler.
- The mixture should be used within eight hours.
Additional Instructions
- Spray the neem insecticide solution on all leaves, especially those parts where insects like to hide. If you have enough liquid, soak the soil around the roots as well.
- Don’t let too much time pass to use it. Once mixed, Neem oil tends to break down. Preferably, only prepare the amount you need to use.
- As a preventive measure, you can spray the mixture once every fifteen days, with a 0.5% solution.
