Jasmine care, the rustic and beautiful climber
It is one of the most popular plants in homes, and there is no lack of reasons for it. Beyond its beauty, jasmine care is highly affordable. So much so that it is a perfect plant for both advanced gardeners and novices. Despite popular belief, jasmine is a rustic and extremely resistant plant. Two details that add to another of its attractions. Whether climbing or bushy, the true beauty of this plant is in its flowering. One that, if we are rigorous in taking care of the jasmine, is not only extremely beautiful despite its simplicity. In addition, it is very generous and has a unique perfume that characterizes this plant.
Before going into detail about jasmine care, it is interesting to know that there are 200 varieties. Something that, if we fall in love with this plant, will allow us to combine different types of them in the same place. And that is another of the virtues of this plant. It does not require to be planted in the ground but we can also enjoy it in a pot.
The place is the least important if we know exactly what you need.
7 JASMINE CARE TO ENJOY ITS BEAUTY
Despite being such a wide family of plants, it is surprising to know that jasmine care is the same for all of them. And not only that. Most of the jasmines are ideal for decorating walls, pergolas or any other support. They are one of those plants that can never be missing from the list of flowering climbing plants for the garden. With one more advantage: it is not an invasive plant or one that can complicate our lives as is the case with others, such as ivy or wisteria. And beware that, at the level of size, it is not far behind with respect to this pair of plants. If we follow the little care of jasmine to the letter, we can see it grow up to six meters high.
Before reading more, our colleague Celia gives us some important insights on the care of jasmine but also on the varieties.
So let’s see how to take care of a jasmine contemplating seven fundamental aspects for its well-being.
1. Light, key in jasmine care
It is probably one of its fundamental care. In order to flower properly, jasmine demands exposure to full sun. It must be understood that it is a plant native to warm climates, so it demands intense light to develop in conditions.
Despite this, it is also possible to grow jasmine without direct sunlight. The only thing we have to know is that, in this case, it will not bloom, although it will develop.
2. The temperature, a minor detail in its cultivation
But, if we have just said that it is a plant from hot climates, how can it be a secondary detail? Well it is. Although jasmine appreciates the heat, the truth is that it is a plant capable of being exposed to cold. It tolerates temperatures of up to three degrees below zero, but let’s keep something in mind: if they are continuous, it is better to take precautions. If it is planted in soil and you live in a climate with harsh winters, the ideal is to cover the roots. Thanks to a garden blanket or a quilt, they will be able to keep warm despite the cold outside.
Finally, knowing how to take care of a jasmine also involves finding a location protected from the wind.
3. Irrigation, abundant in spring and summer months
Like many other plants, jasmine needs watering mainly in the months of growth and flowering. Or, put another way, in those that correspond to those of spring and summer. During these two seasons, the ideal is to water every two or three days.
How to take care of jasmine in the cold months varies the water pattern slightly. During this time, it will suffice to water when we notice that the land has begun to dry out.
4. The floor, another unimportant aspect
We have already warned that it is a rustic and resistant plant. And that is still a real clue to how this plant behaves. Among the jasmine care you will not have to worry much about the type of soil. It is so versatile that it is able to grow even in poor soil. But let’s not fool ourselves: its ideal place is a universal substrate rich in nutrients.
And, although it is not demanding with the place of planting, it is important to contemplate something. The only soil in which under no circumstances can we plant jasmine is clay soil.
5. Drainage, essential in how to care for jasmine
Here comes the explanation as to why clay soils are the only ones that are prohibited in the care of jasmine. We are talking about a plant that does not have tolerance to waterlogging, since its roots rot easily. Hence, it is essential to provide it with a floor that drains excess irrigation water without problems.
6. The subscriber, regular in flowering months
One of the most important jasmine cares, we want to see it full of flowers and growing with joy. During the months of development, the ideal is to apply a monthly dose of fertilizer.
To do this, you can use an organic amendment or, on the contrary, choose a specific fertilizer for this type of plant.
7. Tutors, important for your aesthetics
Unlike other climbing plants, jasmine does not just cling to the surface on which it stands. In order to do it correctly, you need us to place support or a tutor for your growth. If they don’t, we run the risk that instead of climbing they will fall down, adopting the form of a bush.
It is a fact: the simple care of jasmine makes it the plant that, yes or yes, you must have. You will fall in love with its beauty and fragrance!
