The best vegetables to grow in summer
Below I explain the most common summer vegetables, although there are many more, especially in the Mediterranean climate:
1 lettuce
Lettuce can be planted almost at any time of the year, but in summer it develops very well. It is recommended that they germinate in a seedbed and when they have 4-6 leaves, transplant them, leaving about 20 cm between plants. To collect it, it must be cut at ground level, and it is recommended to collect it during the first
morning hours, so they will be more tender to consume. If a crop association is made with dill or chives, in addition to having aromatics for the kitchen in the garden, we will avoid certain pests and diseases, especially in lettuce.
2. Tomato
The tomato is one of the quintessential summer vegetables, one of the most consumed in our country. The tomato plant is a plant that needs a lot of light and heat for its growth. It is very common to grow it, especially in greenhouses, due to the warm climate they need. It is usually sown in spring and harvested in the summer months (July and August).
Each plant can produce from 3 to 5 kg of tomatoes, this depends on the variety and the climatic conditions. To obtain a good production, it is highly recommended to do the specific pruning for it.
3. Pepper
The pepper is from the same family as the tomato, so the common characteristic is that it requires light and heat for its development. The pepper is sown in spring and harvested from July to September, a pepper plant can produce between 9-13 peppers. It needs a soil that is very rich in organic matter and somewhat moist.
4. Onion
The onion is a very easy vegetable to grow, since it can grow in almost any type of soil, it also needs sun and heat to grow properly. There are many varieties of onion on the market, to have it in the garden in summer we can opt for the cultivars «Sweet Onion from Fuentes», purple onions or French onions.
The onions are harvested when the leaves begin to dry, we can use a tool to pry and remove the bulb, once harvested they must be left to dry for approximately 3 days.
5. Radish
The radish is one of the ideal vegetables for growing in the flowerpot because of its small size. It is a very fast growing plant and easy to reproduce. In general, it is not very demanding in terms of maintenance, but in summer it is better to keep it with a slightly moist soil.
It works very well in association with tomato cultivation, because the appearance of weeds is prevented while both have a positive influence on each other for their growth.
6. Beans
Beans do very well in soil that is not heavy and is well drained. They need frequent watering when the plant is in flower. They can be sown from April to August and in this case they are harvested from July to October. Harvesting is done when they measure 10 to 12 cm. It is advisable to do it by hand and carefully so as not to uproot the plant.
7. Cucumber
This plant cannot be missing from your summer garden, it is very typical. The cold does not support it, it needs to be in very sunny and warm places. Cucumber is demanding especially in terms of irrigation. These should be frequent in summer, but the soil should never be flooded. It is sown in spring and harvested from July to October, a plant can produce between 8-10 cucumbers. They should not be collected very yellow because they are more bitter. A very good association would be with the bean and both with coriander, in this way we manage to keep the soil or substrate enriched with nutrients and improve the structure of the soil and in some cases it can increase the harvest. In turn, coriander attracts pollinators, especially cucumbers, and prevents certain pests in both.
In order to enjoy all these vegetables in summer, it is advisable to plan the garden. It is very useful for organic farming to take into account crop associations.
If you have a flowerpot, the most appropriate thing is to choose the smaller species or varieties. Although you can have any plant, always making the necessary pruning to maintain the appropriate size according to the container in which it is located.
