Wheatgrass Care: Growing Wheatgrass indoors and in the garden
Wheatgrass pressers extol the many health benefits supposedly associated with the plant. One serving provides the nutritional benefits of five to seven servings of vegetables a day. Growing wheatgrass indoors is easy and makes it readily available for daily juicing. Enjoy the health benefits when you learn to grow wheatgrass.
You can also grow wheatgrass outdoors, but it is easier to protect the quality of the plant in an indoor environment. Whether you choose to grow indoors or outdoors, grass is a set of nutrients that are best accessed with juice. Its use dates back 5,000 years to Mesopotamian civilization and it is part of the family of grass-like grains such as asbarley and oats.
How to grow wheat grass
The cultivation of wheat grass in a garden or indoors on a tray provides a very nutritious fuel for the body. The disadvantage of growing wheatgrass outdoors is that it will be exposed to animals that explore it, including kittens, bird droppings and other pollutants. It is cleaner and less likely to be damaged when grown indoors.
The plant needs a very superficial growth
average because it is a short-term crop. About 2 teaspoons of organic wheatgrass seeds will fill a small container the size of a standard piece of paper and give you some juice. It is a good idea to start a new seed lot every two days for a regular supply. The first step is to soak the seeds in enough clean water to cover them for 8 to 12 hours.
Stages of wheat grass cultivation
Choose a shallow tray and clean it thoroughly. Remember that this is a food crop, so if necessary, sterilize it with a mild bleach solution and rinse it with clean water. Fill it to a depth of 2 cm with fertilizer, potting soil, orvermiculite and moisten the soil before planting the seeds. It is advisable to use a tray, even if you are growing wheatgrass outside, just to make maintenance easier and to be able to monitor your crop and move it if necessary.
Wheatgrass prefers temperatures between 15-23°C and 90°C, and does not like temperatures above 90°C. (32 C.). Drain the soaked seed and plant it barely covered with soil. If you choose to grow wheat grass in a garden, consider making a mesh cover or using a row cover to protect the grass as it germinates and grows from birds, animals and insects. Water the seedlings twice a day from the base of the plant to avoid fungal problems.
Wheatgrass care
Keep the seedlings in a bright place for the greener shoots, but avoid burning the hot midday sun. There is very little you can do to take care of wheatgrass, other than water it, because it is harvested and used quickly and the goal is not to get a long term plant.
Harvesting begins when the shoots are 6 to 7 cm high. You can also use growing mats to facilitate extraction and composting when you are finished.
If a mold problem begins to appear, mix one tablespoon of baking soda per gallon of water and spray the plants daily. Maintain good circulation in the plants and enjoy their rich health benefits during harvest. Plant a new batch every few days on fresh trays for a regular supply.
